Chicksgrove stone stone dates back to the latter part of the Jurassic period – around 145 million years ago. The stone is taken from the upper part of the Portland Stone Formation and the very lower beds of the Purbeck Limestone Group.
Chicksgrove is a fine grained siliceous limestone, cream-white in colour when fresh, weathering to a grey colour. It occurs in four distinct beds, some of which are very fossiliferous, containing silicified shell fragments that are notably attractive when used for flooring and paving. Large ammonite faunas are also found, though rarely whole.
It is also an approved match for Kentish Ragstone, Reigate Stone, Malmstone, Selborne Stone and Clunch.
