Blog: Why it’s important to encourage the next generation

We are really lucky as a second- generation family business to have a great team, lots of whom have a real history of working with stone and who have seen so many changes within the industry particularly where technology has played its part in processing stone.

So, with the continued development of Hartham Park Bath stone quarry in Corsham, we have decided to take on an apprentice, working closely with Wiltshire College, and play a small part in showing the next generation how rewarding and interesting it is to work within the British stone industry.

Having placed the advertisement and waiting patiently for the outcome, it’s really encouraging to see so many people interested and excited by the position and who see a long-term future working in what we know can be a challenging environment.

It’s so important to harness this interest, making sure the huge amount of passion and knowledge our guys have are passed on so that the quarrying industry is alive and well for generations to come.

It’s a hard job but there is nothing quite like working with stone and seeing such a beautiful, natural and British product coming from the ground and then being turned into something that is simply world class.

For our Hartham team, all they need to do is visit the nearby City of Bath to see Bath stone in its full glory, being safe in the knowledge that they play an important part in its ongoing heritage. It’s clear that apprenticeships offer young people a real opportunity to achieve practical and technical knowledge, forging a career particularly in industries that may not have been at the top of their list but the scheme is enabling real opportunities for both the students and us as an employer.

We are looking forward to welcoming a new apprentice and to watch them develop over the coming months and years, securing a career within the industry we love, enabling them to feel the passion as we do for everything stone.
