Wimpole Gothic Folly – Chicksgrove stone

Lovell Stone Group was delighted to supply Chicksgrove stone for this iconic folly in the heart of Cambridgeshire.

The Gothic Tower was designed to look like a picturesque medieval ruin and lies in the parkland of the National Trust’s 18th Century Wimpole Hall Estate, the largest country house in Cambridgeshire.

The Grade II listed folly was brought to life by great landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown but after centuries of neglect its now been  restored using our Chilmark stone.

The project presented a challenge and the team of conservators, masons and joiners worked extremely hard to ensure it was restored without  compromising its original beauty.

Lewis Proudfoot, Stone Section Manager, Cliveden Construction commented “ We chose Chicksgrove because of its durability but mostly   because it is very similar in appearance to Clunch, which had eroded.

Chicksgrove is very resilient for external use and great to cut and carve, and looked great when finished. Lovell’s are always available to help us, whether it be a small door threshold or a truck load of sawn block, they provide an excellent service”

The project has won two prestigious awards: Stone Awards 2016—Best Repair & Restoration project / 2016 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards
